Hitchhikers Bookbag
The school bag, reimagined.
Many of us have fond memories of the backpack we used during our school days. The one that followed us from the classroom to cafes to outdoor school camps. Some of us still use that backpack! The Hitchhikers’ Bookbag is our take on the school bag. Made with 500D Cordura, YKK zippers, high quality webbing and anodised aluminum hardware, the Bookbag is built to last. And as with everything HitchHikers, it is proudly designed in Singapore.
Clean.
The bookbag’s exterior is kept clean and the shape is akin to that of a school bag. Two carrying reinforced handles, one at the top and another on the side, allow for different ways of carrying. Two expandable side bottle pockets complement the three compartments of the Bookbag.
Functional.
The front pocket, which includes a key loop, is a dump-all pocket for packs of tissue paper, namecards, earbuds and keys. The discreet back compartment, accessible from both sides, is designed for travel documents, money or wallets. The main compartment is a 19 litre compartment. It sports a curved head-to-head YKK reversed coil zipper - a deliberate design feature which helps minimise any obstruction when retrieving items from the main compartment. The bottom of the main compartment is padded to give additional protection for laptops or tablets. Also in the main compartment are two inner sleeves, a mesh compartment for loose items like power banks and pens, and a gusseted compartment for sweaters and jackets.
The back features two closed cell foam padding to form an air channel for comfort. The shoulder straps are designed to provide comfort while negating the need for sternum straps unless absolutely required.
Versatile.
People are adaptable. And the Bookbag is designed to allow for freedom and also for growth with the user. Instead of admin panels, the Bookbag employs a zippered mesh compartment and a gusseted compartment to allow users to carry the items that make sense as their needs evolve. We also went back to the old school tried and tested way of attaching the shoulder straps to the pack using 2” webbing. The webbing allows the shoulder straps to better adapt to the user's shoulder width as they grow.
Durable.
The Bookbag is made with Cordura and YKK zippers and we know those will last.
Side bottle pockets have however, been a pet peeve for us. To keep a sleek profile, the bottle pocket should be expandable and yet, elastic materials will degrade over time. Our bottle pockets use elastic webbing but with a twist. We employ what we call a 2-stage elastic system in our bottle pockets. The webbing loops allow users to either weave shock cords to replace the elastic webbing when it fails or reduce the amount of stretch. Users can also weave paracord through the loops to have a ‘hard stop’ to the stretch. The pockets are also constructed using Cordura instead of mesh for additional durability.
Lastly, a first for our lineup, we used anodised aluminium hardware for the zipper pulls and the ladder locks.
